DESCRIPCIÓN

The SPANISH GOTHIC CHOIRS Project aims to preserve all the sculptures of the Spanish Gothic choirs by means of exhaustive digital photography and cataloguing, for subsequent digital processing so that they can be consulted virtually, piece by piece, globally or even comparatively.

El Proyecto SILLERÍAS GÓTICAS ESPAÑOLAS pretende la preservación de todas las esculturas de las sillerías góticas españolas mediante su exhaustiva fotografía digital y catalogación, para su posterior tratamiento digital de forma que pueda ser consultado de forma virtual, pieza a pieza, de forma global o incluso de forma comparativa.

Digital recreation of the Girona cathedral choir

HISTORY

In the middle of 1993 we photographed in detail the choir stalls of the cathedral of Barcelona in low sensitivity Kodachrome slide format to obtain the catalog of all the carved sculptural figures. In 1995 the choirs of Ciudad Rodrigo and Plasencia were photographed with Kodachrome slides for their cataloguing.

From 2000 digital photography burst in, with poor quality at the beginning but in a few years it improved the quality of the photographic grain.

In 2009 the choirs of Toledo, Talavera de la Reina and Belmonte were photographed with a Canon 5D camera to achieve the cataloguing of the pieces and also of the back panels of the Conquest of Granada with the highest quality available at the time. At that time the patronage of the Project was also attempted in several public and private spheres. The extrusion of the photos was studied to achieve a three-dimensional effect using 3D software.

In 2019 the choirs of León, Oviedo and Astorga were photographed with 24 MP and 42 MP cameras and with Photogrammetry techniques to achieve the virtual environment with Reality Capture software. In mid-October, the choirs of the monasteries of Yuste and Nájera, both located on the back stage of the churches, were also digitized.

Afterwards, we started to reconstruct some missing or displaced choir environments, such as the Cathedral of La Seu d’Urgell or the Cathedral of Oviedo. In 2020 the altarpiece lost of the Cathedral of Seu d’Urgell was photographed and digizated in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Cathedral.

Since 2021, as part of the Doctorate in Architecture at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya UPC, research is being carried out into choir stalls, their construction and the visual recreation of some of them that have disappeared or been displaced. The work on the choir stalls in Oviedo, Palma de Mallorca, Girona and La Seu d’Urgell aims to restore the choral settings to their original context.

HISTORIA

A mediados de 1993 se fotografía en detalle la sillería de la catedral de Barcelona en formato de diapositiva de baja sensibilidad Kodachrome para conseguir el catálogo de todas las figuras escultóricas talladas. En 1995 se fotografían los coros de Ciudad Rodrigo y Plasencia, con diapositiva Kodachrome, para la catalogación de los mismos.

A partir de 2000 irrumpe la fotografía digital, con poca calidad al principio pero que en pocos años mejora la calidad del grano fotográfico.

En el año 2009 se fotografían los coros de Toledo, Talavera de la Reina y Belmonte con cámara Canon 5D de 21 conseguir la catalogación de las piezas y también de los respaldos de la Conquista de Granada con la máxima calidad existente en el momento. En aquel momento se intenta también el mecenazgo del Proyecto en varios ámbitos públicos y privados. Se estudia la extrusión de las fotos para conseguir un efecto tridimensional mediante software de 3D.

En el año 2019 se fotografían los coros de León, Oviedo y Astorga con cámaras de 24 MP y 42 MP y con las técnicas de Fotogrametría para conseguir el entorno virtual con el software Reality Capture. También se digitalizan, a mediados de Octubre, los coros de los monasterios de Yuste y Nájera, ambos ubicados en la tarima posterior de las iglesias. Con posterioridad se empiezan a reconstruir algunos entornos corales desaparecidos o desplazados, como la Catedral de la Seu d’Urgell o la Catedral de Oviedo.

A partir de 2021, en el seno del Doctorado en Arquitectura de la Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya ETSAB-UPC se desarrolla la investigación en torno a las sillerías de coro, su construcción y la recreación visual de algunas de ellas desaparecidas o desplazadas. Los trabajos en las sillerías de Oviedo, Palma de Mallorca, Girona y La Seu d’Urgell buscan una restitución de los entornos corales en su contexto original.

PERSPECTIVES

In the near future, the cataloguing and photogrammetric reproduction of the choirs of the cathedral of Seville and the cathedral of Zamora will be carried out. We also want to complete the three-dimensional representation with additional work on the cathedrals of Barcelona, Ciudad Rodrigo, Plasencia, Toledo, Belmonte and Talavera de la Reina. Authorization has also been requested to digitize the choir stalls of La Seu d’Urgell, which are located in Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, for their virtual restitution to the cathedral.

The three-dimensional representations of the 13 Gothic stalls with figures will be used in immersive and virtual exhibition representations in which the functions of the stalls, the representations found in them and the profane world shown in the carvings of mercy seats, handrails, panels and canopies of the Gothic choirs can be detailed.

It is intended that the Heritage that these works of Art represent will later be available to Humanity for its consultation and study, as well as for the enjoyment of all Art and History lovers.

PERSPECTIVAS

En un futuro próximo se quiere llevar a cabo la catalogación y reproducción fotogramétrica de los coros de la catedral de Sevilla y catedral de Zamora. Asimismo, se quiere completar la representación tridimensional con el trabajo adicional en las catedrales de Barcelona, Ciudad Rodrigo, Plasencia, Toledo, Belmonte y Talavera de la Reina. También se ha pedido autorización para digitalizar la sillería de la Seu d’Urgell, que está ubicada en el castillo de Hearst en San Simeón, California, para su restitución virtual a la catedral.

Las representaciones tridimensionales de las 13 sillerías góticas con figuras se utilizarán en representaciones expositivas inmersivas y virtuales en el que puedan detallarse las funciones de las sillerías, las representaciones que en ellas se encuentran y el mundo profano que se muestra en las tallas de misericordias, apoyamanos, paneles y doseles de los coros góticos.

Se pretende que el Patrimonio que estas obras de Arte representan queden después a disposición de la Humanidad para su consulta y estudio, así como para disfrute de todos los amantes del Arte y de la Historia.
